Interpretations
- Music composition /
- Les Arcs Film Festival, 2025
I had the honor of being selected as a film composer at the Talent Village of the Les Arcs Film Festival. I had the opportunity to work on two feature film projects: Interpretations by director Xin Wang (China-France), and Annie and Joan by director Chloe Culpin (UK).
About the composition of Interpretations
For my collaboration on Xin Wang’s film project Interpretations, I composed a piece whose intention was to give a voice to silence and to the continuous tension running throughout the film. The goal was to capture a sense of suspended time and the fragility of reality, which is why I chose to compose using real, tangible sound materials.
I had the opportunity to record instruments by the Baschet Brothers specifically for this project: sculptural acoustic instruments made of metal, wood, and glass. I recorded nearly two hours of different instruments, which I then edited and used in various ways. To evoke silence, I worked solely with the resonances of certain instruments.
One of the main challenges in the composition process was avoiding an overly dark tone or a conventional thriller aesthetic. It was about finding the right balance between comfort and discomfort, between sonic purity and irregularity.
